Greetings!

My name is Michelle and welcome to Salon Michelle's website. It has been an exciting and glorious journey for me up until now.

Early on I learnt two very important lessons: Lesson 1: COMPETING and FIGHTING is NOT the same thing. Lesson 2: The Hair care Industry is definitely not for the weak or the faint hearted! And although it is an extremely competitive industry, you quickly find that the only person you ACTUALLY end up competing against is YOURSELF! Because YOU as the stylist need to constantly challenge yourself to do better and be better… at everything!

I figured that there were basically 3 types of salons where a stylist could try and compete: The Shopping mall Salon, the Super Brand Salon and the good ol' Family Salon. For this reason I felt that I had to learn how each of them functioned - or should I rather say dysfunction - because as the saying goes "A wise man gets more use from his enemies than a fool from his friends."

And so while studying, I started my apprenticeship at the first type of salon. This well-known salon was situated in a very busy shopping mall. There I found that because of the fairly large volume of people in the mall, the stylist is very likely to have a constant flow of new walk-in clients. Those clients don't know the stylist from a bar of soap, and yet they are willing to trust him/her with their most valuable asset – The ability to make a good first impression. And if the stylist mucks it up then, "Hey, who cares?" because the next sucker is just about to walk in. It did not take me very long to realize, that THAT was exactly what or whom I did not want to be.

Thus my journey had to continue. Next, I went to work at a very famous and respected up-market salon. I learned a lot about the business side of hairdressing and also received some of the best training available in South Africa. It was very exciting times. Styling the hair of celebrities, mixing with the rich and famous, being able to name drop during conversations with the poor old "regular" people. But there I also learned about the bigger picture of hairdressing – IT'S ABOUT THE MONEY. Relationships meant nothing. Return business is a risk. Empty the client's wallet now, for they might not be back to give you a second chance later. And although it was REAL and it was FUN, it was definitely NOT REAL FUN.

Something was still missing and I had to continue my search. Then I ended up in this smallish salon close to my home. We were frequently visited by moms and dads and kids and grannies and… you know, good old REGULAR people. And although I sometimes got the Botox and Busty 50something year old Supermodel, I met some really nice and interesting people. Some gave me a good laugh and some tested my patience, but most became friends.

But the biggest surprise came while I was working there. I found myself. I realized who I wanted to be! These realizations subsequently lead to conflict, because as they say, "Ignorance is bliss". I started to compete, wanting to fight the good fight, not only for me, but for my clients as well. However, I quickly found that one should never argue with an idiot, because they simply drag you down to their level and beat you with their vast experience!

Then my husband and I started talking about this, and he said an interesting thing: "Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain, and most fools do!" Was I the fool? Not a chance! So I figured that sometimes if you want to see a change for the better, you have to take things into your own hands.

And since it is better to light one small candle than to curse the darkness, I decided to light my small candle on 1 May 2009, because nothing preaches better than the act. Hence I can now proudly say, "Welcome to Salon Michelle!"

My salon and this site are for the individual that wants to improve their natural born beauty. I do not have photos of top models on this site and I also do not have posters of top models in my salon. I cater for the individual, the regular person out there. If you go to my picture gallery, you will find some young and some old. Some of my clients have natural modeling-instincts and some have perfection in their personalities. But they all walk out of my salon looking better and feeling more confident. I really put in a lot of effort and personal attention to create the better you. If you do not look like Pamela Anderson, there is nothing you or I can do to make you look like that. BUT THERE IS A BETTER LOOKING YOU inside of yourself and I can help you find that person.

This is a passion that I found and I still love every moment of it, every minute of every day. I believe in relationships, I believe in friendships and I believe in family. Fortunately, I have one the most supportive system you can find. Yes, my husband and my son. But before I go on and on... why don't you come over for a visit? Simply click on the "Contact Us" link below to find out exactly where we are. I would love to meet you!

Anyway... Thank you for your time and I hope you find what you are looking for. Enjoy the rest of my site!

Michelle
